The purpose of Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael – Jewish National Fund activity over the past century has been to enable to Jewish People to have a national life in its own land. This country belongs to the Jewish People as a whole and the people are bound to it with every fiber of its soul. KKL-JNF is the practical expression of this concept. It serves as trustee for the people over this treasure which is known as the Land of Israel and it acts so that this asset will forever remain in its hands. Benjamin Zeev (Theodore) Herzl put it most succinctly: The people are the owners; they pay for it and they settle it. These simple yet intrinsic principles still hold true today, a full century after Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael was founded. The annals of KKL-JNF over this period are the story of the Zionist enterprise. It was the actions of KKL-JNF over the years that determined, in a practical sense, the borders of the State and how the country was to look. The organization worked for realization of the fundamental principle of redemption of the soil, with preservation and development of nationally owned land, while adapting itself to changing needs. Currently, alongside the millions of trees KKL-JNF has planted, the parks, picnic areas and observation points, the hiking trails, shaded rest areas around border villages and Negev army bases and the restoration of Israel’s waterways, there are two immediate challenges facing KKL-JNF: the development of new water sources to help in the country’s water shortage and preservation of environmental quality in Israel. Keren Kayemeth is not only an organization that engages in development but is also a green organization, conserving nature’s vital resources. We invite you to become partners in the great work KKL-JNF is doing for the people and for the land, for all of us, by inscribing your name or that of a loved one in the KKL-JNF Books of Honor. With every entry, KKL-JNF gives a personal certificate of appreciation to commemorate important and memorable moments in your life.
