Moshko Rom Scenic Lookout (Mitzpor Moshko Rom), Shafir Valley

Location: The fields of Shafir Regional Council, near Kiryat Malakhi.

Description: The low hill is not impressive at first sight but nevertheless, surprisingly, when you ascend to the observation deck at the top of the hill, there is a spectacular view on all sides of 30,000 dunams of intensive agriculture. Beyond the circle of agriculture, from here you can see the expanses from Gush Etzion in the Hebron Mountains to Ashdod and Ashkelon near the Mediterranean. There is also a bonus: many butterflies that take advantage of the site’s vegetation. The place served for many years as a disposal site for agricultural waste and building waste. The late Moshko Rom, of the Sorek–Lakhish drainage authority, persuaded the relevant parties to close the garbage dump, and now the place has become a respectable observation point.

Directions: Drive from Kiryat Malakhi towards Ashkelon (Route 3) and turn left to Shafir. Cross the entire length of the moshav and 600 meters from the end of the moshav drive west for 1.6 km on a good dirt road.
